So many exciting things are happening in KC’s poetry scene, and Jeanette Powers is one of the main instigators. As producer of Poetic Underground, she oversees weekly open mics, and the nationally certified poetry slam, PoUnd SLAM, as well as inviting and hosting nationally acclaimed poets to showcase here in Kansas City. Poetic Underground will also feature at this year’s Folk Alliance Conference.
Jeanette and local book guru, Jason Ryberg, have teamed up to create an ambitious publishing project, Pop Poetry. Thanks to the gracious board at Spartan Press, these two local poets are putting out 12 poetry books in the next 12 months, all of which are Kansas City based verse and spoken word artists.
The first in the series is Earthworms & Stars, by Jeanette herself. This collection features a delightful range of serious and absurd poems and includes some of Jeanette’s newest work, which is designed for competitive poetry events. Last November she won a spot on the first ever KC poetry slam team that will get to compete at National Poetry Slam in August of 2015.
At this event, other PoUnd ( http://garrygolden.com/transportation POetic Mundargi UNDerground) poets will be reading selections from Jeanette’s new book, as well as a performance by the Sparkle Pony herself. Entry is $10 and includes a copy of Earthworms & Stars.
